After taking a week off, the Sprint Cup Series of NASCAR is now back and ready to head to Bristol Motor Speedway for this year’s Food City 500 on Sunday, March 21.

Coming into the week, based off previous wins and races, the two favored drivers this week are Denny Hamlin and Kyle Busch. A couple other pre-race favorite drivers include Jeff Gordon, Mark Martin, and Jimmie Johnson.

Looking at the last three Food City 500 races, Kyle Busch has won two of them along with 3 wins and seven top 10s. Looking at averages, his average finish at Bristol remains at about a 10th place finish and he comes in second of active drivers in terms of driver ratings. If he could pull off a win on Sunday at this Food City 500 event, he could gain positions in the point standings where he currently sits 15th.

Now, although Denny Hamlin has not won this particular event, he is a pre-race favorite and has five top 10s as well as 3 top 5s. His average finish falls just sly of Kyle Busch between 11 and 12 with a fifth ranking of driver ratings. If Hamlin could pull off this Sunday’s win at Bristol, he could gain positions in the point standings where he currently sits 22nd and sitting that far back, he could use the position gain although it is still early in the season.

Jeff Gordon has won the Food City 500 a number of times, four to be exact, and claimed his victories from 1995 to 1998. He has five Bristol Motor Speedway wins in addition to his 20 top 10s and 1 short of 15 top 5s. He currently sits in 11th position in point standings.

Now, Mark Martin is pre-race favorite, although he has never won this particular event, but does have two wins at the track. Within his racing career, he has had 234 top 10 finishes at Bristol. Martin comfortably sits in seventh position in point standings.

Jimmie Johnson seems to be the favorite all year and has won almost every single event this season already. He has never been able to claim a victory here at Bristol nor for this particular Food City 500 event. At Bristol Motor Speedway, Johnson has eight top 10s and 3 top 5s. He currently sits comfortably in fourth position in the Sprint Cup point standings.

Moving even further to the long shot bet for this Food City 500 event is Marcos Ambrose. Ambrose tops all other drivers for this track in driver ratings and his average finish is between six and seven at Bristol Motor Speedway. Personally, although he is the underdog in this case, I wouldn’t completely underestimate him for this Sunday’s race.

Tune in this Sunday to the 500 lap 2010 Food City 500 held at Bristol Motor Speedway in Bristol, Tennessee, with the green flag waving shortly after 1pm Eastern.
