What is Raiders’ JaMarcus Russell’s Destiny?

JaMarcus Russell hasn’t been one to prove himself very well over the past few years in the NFL and not only have fans seen this, but scouts as well as the team and coaches of the Oakland Raiders.  However, it isn’t until now that they are finally going to do something about it.

Since acquiring quarterback Jason Campbell this past Saturday, the Raiders have been scoping the release of JaMarcus Russell from the Oakland Raiders team.  It is not so much as an if it is going to happen but exactly when it is going to happen.  The Raiders are wanting to try to finish and cut this deal prior to this weekend when the team’s mini-camp commences.

From LSU, JaMarcus Russell was the team’s very first pick in the 2007 NFL Draft.  Although he is set to make a remarkable $9 million this year as well as next year, he has only provided catastrophe for himself and the team since being selected by the Raiders in 2007.  Not only has his playing not been impressive, which I’ll expand on in just a moment, he now weighs more than 300 pounds, which isn’t something that should be brought up about a team’s star quarterback.

Speaking more about money with Russell, the Raiders will save approximately $7 million in this NFL season alone by releasing Russell from the team.  This is a large amount of money to shell out when a player isn’t really worthy of it.  This is one of the reasons that the Raiders are trying to cut Russell before the mini-camp this weekend.  He is guaranteed $3 million so he will receive that even if he is cut from the team, but if they don’t get this cut underway and taken care of before this weekend then $10 million could go to JaMarcus Russell if he gets hurt before the commencement of the NFL season.

Now, before the team had selected Jason Campbell in last weekend’s draft, the team had already pretty much replaced Russell with Bruce Gradkowski.  Russell had already been sharing his playtime with Gradkowski and Charlie Frye this past season.  JaMarcus Russell was able to only achieve to throw 3 touchdown passes and 11 interceptions in his participation of 12 games and starting of nine games.  In 25 games that Russell has started, he only threw 18 touchdown passes, 23 interceptions, and 15 fumbles.  It could definitely have been better for him – he could have at least tried a little harder or found some inspiration in the $36 million that he received in the past three NFL seasons that he has spent with the Oakland Raiders.
