Kobalt Tools 500 Qualifying – Pole Goes to Dale Earnhardt Jr.
Qualifying has rounded up for the Kobalt Tools 500 Sprint Cup Race this Sunday and Dale Earnhardt Jr. secures the pole.
Looking into this Sunday’s race, I can’t say that I feel that Jr. has what it takes even though with this pole, Jr.’s race odds doubled. Talking about odds, Jimmie Johnson is still a major favorite of sportsbooks with Jeff Gordon, Kevin Harvick, Kyle Busch, and Mark Martin next in line.
Jimmie Johnson has a total of four wins at Atlanta with the last being in 2007. Johnson has 9 top 5 finished and 11 top 10 finishes here. He currently sits safely in fifth position in the point standings and he qualified 15th for Sunday’s race.
Jeff Gordon holds two wins of this specific race, but four wins at the Atlanta track. He is one short of 15 top 5’s and is 2 short of having 25 top 10’s. He is currently 13th in point standings and starts in 5th position this Sunday. We’ll see if he can come bring some momentum back into the race from his two finishes outside of the top 15 this year.
Kevin Harvick will start the race in 35th position this week although the odds of him winning have jumped this past week. Harvick is the current point’s leader and has four top 5 finishes along with one more top 10 in the 18 starts at this track, apart from his 2001 win here.
Kyle Busch has a 2008 victory for this race that came to him in 2008 and is his only victory here. He has two top 5’s as well as two top 10’s here. He currently sits at 12th in the points standings and this entire season has seen finishes in the 14-15 positions. He starts second Sunday alongside Earnhardt Jr.
Mark Martin has seen two victories here at Atlanta Motor Speedway, but not with this spring event. He has one shy of 15 Top 5’s and 23 Top 10’s. He is currently third in the point standings and has finished 12th or above in all three races this season thus far. You’ll see Martin rolling off in fourth position for Sunday’s race.
Who do you think will win? Place your bets and stay tuned to the Kobalt Tools 500 held at Atlanta Motor Speedway March 7th at Noon Eastern Standard Time.
