This weekend, the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series will be headed to Charlotte Motor Speedway for the Coca-Cola 600.  This is ultimately the longest NASCAR race throughout the year.

Currently, Jimmie Johnson is the favorite to win the Coca-Cola 600 Sunday.  A few short odds for the race include both Kyle and Kurt Busch, Denny Hamlin, as well as Jeff Gordon.

Johnson won this particular event three years in a row, 2003-2005.  The following year he finished second but has finished outside of the Top 10 since then.  His driver rating is the top of the series and he has a 8.6 average finish.  He is currently sitting fourth in the Sprint Cup season standings and hasn’t seen inside the Top 10 in the past five races.  He does have three victories for this year though.

Onto the Busch brothers…Kyle Busch finished third in this race in 2008 and sixth last year.  He holds three Top 5 career finishes at Charlotte with a 19 average finish and 104.4 driving rating, which makes him second within the series. Busch is currently second in the Cup standings, right behind point leader Kevin Harvick.

Kyle’s older brother Kurt Busch isn’t that great at Charlotte, as he hasn’t finished inside the Top 10 in the past four years for this event.  He has almost a 21 average finish and a 81.6 driver rating for his three Top 5’s at Charlotte.  He currently sits in ninth position for the season’s standings, but did win the All-Star race this past weekend.  He currently has one victory as well as four Top 5’s for this year.

Now, Denny Hamlin has never been able to finish inside the Top 5 for this race at Charlotte Motor Speedway, but has finished inside the Top 10 three times.  He also has a driving rating of 82.6 (13th position) and he has an 18.6 average finish.  He is currently fifth in the season’s point standings, 150 behind Harvick.  In the last six races, Hamlin has finished within the Top 4 of five of those races.  He has three victories this year as well as five Top 5’s.  Although this track may not be his best nor his favorite, he has been doing exceptionally well this year – winning races just weeks after having a complete knee surgery.

Jeff Gordon has only won this particular event once in 1994 and found himself finishing fourth in 2008.  He has 5 victories as well as 16 Top 5’s in his career at Charlotte Motor Speedway.  His average finish is 15.7 with a driving rating of 99.5, which is sixth in ranking.  He is currently also in sixth position for point standings this year.  Although he hasn’t had any wins this year, he is coming around and has had five Top 5’s.

Charlotte Motor Speedway’s Coca-Cola 600 will begin a little after 6pm ET on Sunday, May 30.  The drivers will take the green flag for 400 laps on this oval track.
