Button Sees Odds Cut in Drive for Glory
Now that another racing season is underway no doubt Formula One fans can expect yet another round of thrills, spills and possibly a little controversy, too. Fans and bookmakers alike are enthused about the new season, and bookies have cut the odds of Jenson Button winning this year’s F1 title to 6/1 after Button snatched a dramatic win in the recent drama-infused Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai.
Button, the current world champion, had been penciled in each way to win with odds of 16/1 by many bookies post-qualifying. Jenson had only managed to qualify fifth on the starting grid, although he was able to handle the difficult and wet conditions best of all in taking his second win of the season. Button finished ahead of his McLaren teammate, Lewis Hamilton, as well as third-placed Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg.
As a result Button is now ahead in the overall drivers’ standings with 60 points, standing 10 points clear of Rosberg (at odds of 22/1) in second place. Sebastian Vettel was not able to deliver following his win in the Malaysian Grand Prix, finishing a disappointing sixth. Although Vettel now stands 15 point behind Button in fifth in the drivers’ standings the bookmakers still have him as the favorite to take the title this year at odds of 2/1. Fernando Alonso of Ferrari stands in third on the drivers’ standing with 49 points after posting a fourth place finish in Shanghai. As a result many bookmakers now have him as the 11/4 second-favorite. Lewis Hamilton, the 2008 world champion is not too far behind with odds of 3/1.
Among some of the more outside chances being quoted are Mark Webber, currently on 28 points in the standings quoted currently at odds of 20/1, and Felipe Massa who is currently on 41 points has odds of 22/1. Meanwhile the modern legend of the sport, seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher currently on 10 points in the drivers’ standings has fairly long odds of 66/1, perhaps somewhat unsurprisingly as a result of his age and the fact that he has been out of competition for a number of years now. His fitness and reactions are still legendary, however, so do not be surprised should he excel in coming heats. Robert Kubica, currently in 40 points in the standings, has even longer odds of 100/1.
