2010 World Snooker Odds
We are now up to the eleventh day of the World Snooker Championships that are taking place at the Crucible Theatre, in Sheffield. The tournament has now reached the quarter-finals and has just over a week left to run before we discover who will be the world snooker champion for 2010.
Perhaps the biggest story of the tournament thus far this year is that of the former six-time world championship, Steve Davis, who is playing in his 30th world championship in Sheffield. In his second round match, Davis overcame the defending world champion, John Higgins, by 13 frames to 11 and thus set up a quarter-final encounter with Neil Robertson, which starts today and promises to be a fascinating contest.
Irrespective, however, of Davis’ fine recent form, the Australian, Robertson, is the massive odds-on favorite to beat the former world champion with bookmakers giving odds as short as 1/9 on a Robertson victory. This may well be in part due to the fact that, much like Davis, Robertson is also in the form of his career and he came back from a difficult-looking 11-5 frame deficit in his second-round contest against England’s Martin Gould to eventually win a nail-biter by 13-12.
Many bookies will undoubtedly feel that the Australian should have more than enough at his disposal to see off the challenge from the venerable Davis in their best of 25-frame quarter-final, although they may well have thought much the same where John Higgins was concerned, so punters may be more wary this time around. Victor Chandler are currently offering odds of 5/1 on a Davis win, and he remains very much the outsider of the final eight players in the tournament with odds of 28/1 offered for him to take his seventh world crown. Davis, though, has the advantage of having had a few days rest since his victory over John Higgins and will doubtlessly be fresh for the start of his last eight contests.
Ronnie O’Sullivan is still the favorite among the bookies to win the world title at odds of 15/8 as he defeated former world champion Mark Williams in the second round. O’Sullivan will now face Mark Selby, a former giant killer himself, having previously seen off another previous world champion in the form of Stephen Hendry. Selby is currently second favorite in terms of outright betting so clearly bookmakers are agreed that the eventual winner will emerge from this quarter-final contest.
O’Sullivan is the best priced at a 4/7 favorite with bookmakers Victor Chandler to get through to the semi-finals. The other contests see Graeme Dott against Northern Ireland’s Mark Allen, with Ali Carter against Shaun Murphy. Allen is at odds of 4/9 to beat former champion Dott whilst Shaun Murphy is 8/15 favorite in his match against Carter.
