However, now the Red Wings have received even more bad news for their team. Goalie Chris Osgood will now also be off the ice for six to eight weeks due to a sports hernia.

Osgood has had an examination displaying that he does in fact have a sports hernia but until the doctor gets in to perform the surgery, the extent of the injury isn’t fully known. We do know that he is going to miss several weeks. If there isn’t a significant tear then he’ll likely only be out four to six weeks, depending on long it takes him to recover; otherwise, if a considerable tear is seen by the doctor then the Red Wings will be without one of their star goalies for eight weeks.

After just recently becoming the 10thgoaltender in the history of the NHL to reach 400 wins, Osgood is now scheduled to undergo surgery today, Tuesday, January 11, with Dr. William Meyer performing the hernia surgery in Philadelphia.

This isn’t something that just crept up on the goaltender as Osgood has been experiencing major discomfort for the past couple of months, but has been fighting the pain and playing through it. However, he couldn’t do that any longer over the weekend during practice on Saturday morning. He was supposed to start in Saturday’s game against Vancouver but when he experienced a more significant amount of pain than what he normally has been, he ended up dressing at the backup.  He went home after being unable to perform fully in practice, headed to Philadelphia on Monday at which time he was diagnosed with a sports hernia and the surgery for Tuesday was scheduled.

Stuart and Osgood aren’t the only two players that the Red Wings will be without over the next few weeks as they will be without Danny Cleary who is out with an ankle injury, forward Mike Modano is out with his wrist and Pavel Datsyuk is out with his hand. These players likely won’t be back until next month and there is no set timetable on their return. The team is obviously hoping they are able to come back out on the ice earlier in the month of February rather than later, but that is yet to be determined.

With Osgood’s absence, Minor League goaltender Joey MacDonald was called up from the AHL in order to be a backup goalie to starting goalie Jimmy Howard.

The Oklahoma Sooners have indefinitely suspended wide receiver Jaz Reynolds, a sophomore at the college, who has not even got to play with the Sooners this year.

Tuesday, a gunman entered into the Texas college’s library where he opened fire and then went on to kill himself.  In light of those events, Reynolds logged into his Twitter account and posted the following, according to USA Today and other media sources:

“Hey everyone in Austin, tx…….kill yourself #evillaugh”

Then went on to make another Twitter post a few moments later saying:

“Everyone in austin, tx disregard that last tweet….y’all will mess around n do it lmao”

While Reynolds apparently thought his remarks were inevitably funny, Coach Bob Stoops for the Okalhoma Sooners certainly did not.  He acted immediately in the suspension so that Reynolds would see that this matter was not a joke.  With his suspension, he will miss at a minimum this Saturday’s game where the Sooners will play Texas.

The LA times reports that the Twitter account is no longer in active status.

He has been experiencing discomfort in his arm for the past two games but has been able to push through it and play – well at that.  In those two games, he has pitched 14 innings allowing only two runs during that time.  However, in his start Friday, which was his 20^th win this year, the discomfort was a little bit worse.  This is when an MRI date was set.  Wainwright apparently has a muscle strain in his right forearm, according to MRI results from an MRI that the 29-year-old underwent on Monday.

Wainwright finished the season with an earned run average of 2.42 and 20-11. He is also third ranked in strikeouts with 213.  Wainwright is ultimately expected to finish among the top three of the CY Young for the National League.

Last year, in 2009, 23-year-old Williams had two starts in four games with the Washington Redskins then was acquired by Chicago at the beginning of September off waivers.  He was one of the final few cuts made when the preseason came to an end.  Williams, out of Maryland, was actually an undrafted free agent in 2009 of Washington.

In order to make room for Williams on the active roster, the Bears waived Johan Asiata.  He had been given the opportunity ultimately to play at guard during the offseason but the spots eventually went to Roberto Garza as well as Lance Louis for a starting combination.  If Asiata ends up clearing waivers, Chicago may decide to put him back on the practice squad but for now the future is untold.

Neither of these teams will win any awards for offensive production. The Steelers, with their quarterback trio that is now a duo, have had an accordingly uneven passing attack. Batch will get the start against the Bucks, and he is 4-2 in such games. He still has the ever-reliable Hines Ward to throw to, and running back Rashard Mendenhall has been relatively productive, running for 189 yards on 45 carries so far this year. The Tampa Bay secondary is anchored by Ronde Barber, who is still going strong in 2010, with a pair of interceptions on the season already. Batch is going to have to spread the ball around, because Barber will be shadowing the equally aging Ward. A balanced attack should eventually wear down the Buck defense.

Tampa Bay, meanwhile, hasn’t had much better production out of their quarterback, Josh Freeman. He’s gone 29 of 52 for 360 yards and four touchdowns so far this year. The yardage is mediocre, but he has put the ball in the end zone when it counted, with two of those touchdowns going to rookie receiver Mike Williams. Tight end Kellen Winslow has also contributed significantly to the Bucks’ offensive success. Freeman will be handing off to Cadillac Williams, who has gotten off to a good start in 2010, handling the ball often and showing signs of returning to his old form. However, he’ll need to keep the legs churning to run through the tough Steelers defensive line.

Overall, the fans in Tampa are probably in for a low-scoring struggle, which plays to the Steelers strengths. Tampa will need to establish the running game early and hope that Freeman can do enough in the passing game to keep the Steelers off balance. Meanwhile, the Steelers will have to hope for a solid start from Batch along with more stifling defense. In the end, the Steelers are likely to be the last team standing.

The Boston papers and talk shows have recently relegated the Red Sox to the back burner. More paper real estate and talk show time is dedicated to the beginning of the Patriots football season. At best, Red Sox fans figured the team had a chance to spoil the Yankees’ quest for another AL East championship. With hard work and a lot of luck, however, they may see their team pull off one of the most breathtaking comebacks in the last several years.

After their game on Sunday, the Yankees head to Toronto for three, while the Red Sox head to Chicago to take on the White Sox. Each series could go either way. The White Sox have been on a downward slide since mid season, while the Blue Jays have been holding their own around or just above the 500 mark. To pull off this upset, the Red Sox will have to continue their solid play against the White Sox and hope the Yankees lose two out of three to the Blue Jays. Ordinarily, that would be a long shot, but the Yankees recent stumbles and problems cropping up with their pitching roster may shorten the odds a bit.

All-Pro cornerback Revis was one of the holdouts in the preseason – sitting out more than a month with a total of 36 days before finally getting a four-year contract worth $46 million – and initially revealed that he had a hamstring injury during practice last week, which caused him to have limited practice sessions.  He ended up playing in the first half this last weekend but left just shortly before halftime after allowing a touchdown pass to be intercepted by Randy Moss of the Patriots, at which time he grabbed his leg immediately in pain.

Revis proclaims that he’ll likely miss about one to two weeks, which means that he could miss this Sunday’s away game against the Miami Dolphins.  However, Revis says not to rule him out of this week’s game just yet but he does plan on taking his status day-to-day.  He doesn’t want to get on the field until he is properly healed and healthy enough to play again.  There’s no chance at furthering the extent of his injury if it isn’t needed.  Right now, the cornerback claims that there is tightness in his hamstring and he doesn’t plan on playing until that tightness has vanished completely and he feels 100 percent.

Although he blames his holdout as a huge element in his hamstring injury, he says he wouldn’t have changed a thing.

Last night, after throwing a pass that resulted in a touchdown for his team West Orange – Stark Mustangs against Jasper for a second time in Friday night’s game, Reggie Garrett collapsed on the sidelines.

Garrett reportedly had a history of seizures ( the last one being about three years ago according to his mother and Coach) and everyone thought the senior quarterback would be fine and he would be back at practice next week; however, this simply wasn’t true.  The ambulance transported Garrett to the hospital, where he passed away before the fourth quarter of the football game.

While I was not at the game myself, it was shocking to come across this news on the internet this morning.

The game was finished because no one was certain of the status of Garrett.  Garrett would have been proud of his team winning the game 27-6.

The 2-6, 6-4 and 7-6 win was over opponents and the second-seeded team of Nadia Petrova from Russia and Liezel Huber of the United States.  Kind and Shvedova were actually the sixth-seeded team have played in just seven tournaments as a doubles team and have not successfully claimed victories in two major doubles championships back-to-back – both the Wimbledon and the U.S. Open.

After winning at Wimbledon, they were uncertain whether they could secure another victory.  They have now proven to themselves and everyone else that they can indeed secure another win, which is probably the first of many to come.

During third set of the match, rain put a halt to the finishing of the tennis match at which time Huber and Petrova had a 5-4 lead over King and Shvedova.  When the match commenced again on Monday, King and Shvedova had a strong comeback and secured their championship win.  Shvedova is the first Kazakhstan tennis player to ever win any type of U.S. Open title.

This is Boss’s second concussion in the past year, which was suffered last Sunday in the regular season opener victory of 31-18 against the Carolina Panthers.  The concussion came when he was hit in the back of his helmet during an overthrown pass during just the first quarter of the football game.  He was then carted off the football field and didn’t return.

On Tuesday, tight end Bear Pascoe was signed off the practice squad for the Giants making him one of only two healthy tight ends on the New York Giants roster.  The second TE would be Travis Beckum, who will be the most likely to get majority of the snaps this time.
